The University Technical Institute(UTI) presented its first ever Edward Fletcher Student Excellence Award during a graduation ceremony at Fallbrook Church in Houston on Friday, March 21.
Starting his 14-year career as an instructor at the UTI Houston Campus, Edward “Ed” Fletcher, a Plantersville resident, also served as education manager, education director and eventually employment director. As employment director he made significant contributions to the campus’ employment services department.
“Ed is well respected across the whole company for [the] great contributions he’s made [through] his original ideas and automated systems that have been adopted by the whole company,” Jeanette Hottmann, UTI Houston’s campus controller, said while introducing Fletcher as the keynote speaker at the March 21 graduation ceremony. “He’s changed the way we do our business.”
In honor of Fletcher’s retirement, UTI created the Edward Fletcher Student Excellence Award, which to his surprise, was announced during the graduation ceremony. Originally called the Dave Hill Student Excellence Award, the award is given to one student in the Auto/Diesel program for each graduation class. The award covers the student’s entire time on campus and students are nominated by UTI Houston instructors for their outstanding performance in representing the highest level of professionalism and technical excellence.
“I was surprised when they made the award in my name,” Fletcher said. “It’s without a doubt the biggest honor in my life. UTI has a great culture, was a great place to work and I won’t forget it.”
During the graduation ceremony, Spring, Texas native Nate Roy became the first recipient of the Edward Fletcher Student Excellence Award. Roy started at UTI December 2012 after graduating early from Spring High School. Just two months before his start at UTI, Roy landed a job at Ferrari, where he is still employed.
“It was an honor to be chosen by my instructors out of everyone for this award,” Roy said. “It’s an even bigger honor to be the first one who receives that.”
